O'HARA - O'Hara (1967-68)










































O'HARA was a vocal and instrumental band from Zagreb, Croatia (ex-Yugoslavia), which has worked since 1965 to 1967. Most of the band members formed the guys from a Technical School in Zagreb. The band was established in 1965 by Edvin Haramina (drums), Miljenko Ljubić (bass), Rajko Boltižar (lead guitar), Frano Parać (keyboards) and singer Marcela Munger. O'Hara began performing at the dance club in the local community. In 1967 band left Rajko Boltižar, briefly replaced by Goran Ivas, then Krešimir Ivić. After that band left singer Marcela Munger, and in its place hops Josipa Lisac. It is the golden age of band O'Hara. After that band O'Hara falls apart and Frane Parać and Josipa Lisac goes to the "Zlatni akordi". (from wikipedia)

KUD IDIJOTI - Lutke na koncu (1986-89)










































KUD IDIJOTI is a punk-rock band from Pula (Croatia). The band was formed on February 2, 1981 and released their first album in 1986. In 1987 they won at the Youth Festival in Subotica and are one of the most popular bands on the punk scene of the former Yugoslavia.


MAJKE - Razum i bezumlje (1984-89)





































MAJKE founded in 1988 in Vinkovci, Croatia (ex-Yugoslavia). Majke are one of the many bands to appear in a city that had a particularly vibrant rock and alternative scene. The band started playing under the influence of bands like Flamin' Groovies, Led Zeppelin, MC5, Steppenwolf, The Stooges and New York Dolls. In 1990 the group released their first album "Razum i bezumlje". All that came to a crashing end in 1991 with the outbreak of the war and Vinkovci becoming one of the battlefields. Majke were the only band to survive, mostly thanks to its frontman Goran Bare who was the only constant member of the band. In 1993 they released their second album "Razdor". In 1994 after a series of well received concerts all over Croatia they released their third album called "Milost". In 1996 they released their successful album to date called "Vrijeme je da se krene". In 1997 they released a live album "Život uživo". Their last album was released in 1998 under the title of "Put do srca sunca". In Spring 2000 the band announced they had split, but some concerts were held in 2001 due to contractual obligations. PARAF - A dan je tako lijepo počeo (1979)






































PARAF is a punk rock and later post-punk band from Rijeka, Croatia, known as one of the pioneers of punk rock in the former Yugoslavia. Following the expansion of punk rock in Europe, teenagers Valter Kocijančić (guitar, vocals), Zdravko Čabrijan (bass) and Dušan Ladavac "Pjer" formed Paraf during the late 1977. The band had their first live appearances at the Rijeka high-schools along with the bands of similar musical orientation, Termiti, Protest and Lom. During the late 1978, the band started performing frequently, even outside Rijeka. They played in Ljubljana, Beograd, Zagreb. The band also performed at the Novi Sad Boom festival, as well as an opening act for The Ruts concert in Zagreb. In 1979, they released their debut single "Rijeka", a cover version of the Ramones song "Chinese Rocks", but Kocijančić signed as the song author in order to test the Yugoslav critics of the time. Despite the intention, it was the Džuboks magazine journalist Petar Luković who recognized that the song was a cover version. The band also appeared on the various artists compilation album Novi punk val 78-80, released in 1980, with the song "Narodna pjesma". After several delays, the band debut album "A dan je tako lijepo počeo"was released by ZKP RT Ljubljana during the spring of 1980. Due to the explicit lyrics, the album was taxed as kitsch despite the fact that a part of the lyrics had to be changed and the band had to use an alternate album cover. Following the punk rock ideology, the band discussed several themes which were at the time new to the Yugoslav rock: the songs featured ironic usages of communist slogans, mocked, at the time, one of the most popular bands, Bijelo Dugme, in the song "Pritanga i vaza", insulting the police in the censored version of "Narodna pjesma", and dealt with social themes typical for a seaside city. The album production was done by the band's close associate Goran Lisica "Fox", assisted by Igor Vidmar. After the album release Valter Kocijančić left the band, later joining the band Istočni Izlaz, until quitting his musical career and becoming a teacher, which is also his current occupation. The new members had become the vocalist Pavica Mijatović, using the pseudonym Vim Cola, and the guitarist Klaudio Žic. The latter soon after left the band and the new members had become the guitarist Mladen Vičić "Riči" and keyboard player Raul Varlen. With the arrival of the new members, the band also changed their musical style, moving towards post-punk, influenced by the popular British bands of the genre. The new musical orientation was presented to the wider audience on the second studio album "Izleti". After a series of promotional concerts, the guitarist Vičić left the band, being replaced by a former Termiti member Robert Tičić. The new lineup started recording the third studio album, and during the period in between the recording sessions and the album mixing the twenty-two-year-old Tičić got a flow of blood onto the brain which was fatal to him. His replacement was the guitarist Mladen Ilić, later the founder of the band Psi. The album "Zastave", released in 1984, featured lyrical themes related to the near history, influenced by Miroslav Krleža. The album was produced by the band themselves with the Borghesia member Aldo Ivančić. Despite offering a serious release, especially in the tracks "U pobjede nove" and "Zlatno doba", the album, due to being uncommunicative, was not well accepted by the audience. The band existed until 1986 when they disbanded. Pavica Mijatović and Zdravko Čabrijan got married and moved to Krk where they started a tourist business. Drummer Dušan Ladavac joined Let 2 but left the band before it evolved into Let 3. The original Paraf lineup reunited in 1994 in order to perform at the Ri-Rock festival, the third Fiju Briju festival, as well as to perform several solo concerts. In 1996, Kocijančić performed the song "Rijeka" with the ad hoc group Blagdan Band, and the recording of the song appeared on the live album "Pallach's not dead". The original lineup reunited again on December 13, 2003, and the recordings of the songs "Rijeka" and "Hit tema" from the performance were released on the various artists live album "25. Ri-Rock", released by Dallas Records in 2004. Four years later, in 2008, the band reunited in both the punk rock and post-punk lineups at the promotion of the "Riječki novi val" box set. PRLJAVO KAZALIŠTE - Prljavo Kazalište (1979)








































PRLJAVO KAZALIŠTE was formed in 1977, in Zagreb, Croatia (ex-Yugoslavia). Founding members included: Jasenko Houra (rhythm guitar), Zoran Cvetković (lead guitar), Nino Hrastek (bass guitar) and Tihomir Fileš (drums). Its first vocalist became Davorin Bogović, although they were thinking about taking Davor Gobac (later of Psihomodo pop) instead. All of them, except Houra, previously played in another band called Ciferšlus, but after he joined them to form a new group, they opted for the name Prljavo kazalište after an episode of the satirical Italian comic book Alan Ford, which was very popular in the former Yugoslavia. In its early beginnings, Prljavo kazalište's was a punk band, although they initially wanted to sound like The Rolling Stones for whom they maintained a great admiration. The group performed live for a first time in 1978 at a gig organized by the magazine "Polet" where they were noted for their furious punk image and stage performance. In the same year, Prljavo kazalište released its first single, the punk rock sounding "Televizori" for the major record label Jugoton. It featured three songs: "Televizori", "Majka" and "Moje djetinjstvo". In 1979, Suzy Records released their second single "Moj je otac bio u ratu". That song was included in the compilation album "Novi punk val" compiled by Igor Vidmar, along with Pankrti, Paraf and other prominent artists of the former Yugoslav punk scene. In 1979, they released their first eponymous album, produced by Piko Stančić, for Suzy Records. It was promoted when the group performed as a support act of the Yugoslav band Bijelo dugme at a concert held at the JNA Stadium. During the recording sessions, Zoran Cvetković left the band and was replaced by Marijan Brkić. The album soon came to prominence all over the former Yugoslav federation for its social commentary and provoked the then-ruling one-party system, additionally because it also featured probably the first gay-themed song in Yugoslavia titled "Neki dječaci" (followed later by "Retko te viđam sa devojkama" by Idoli). The authorities valuated the album as "šund" and hence they imposed higher taxes on its sale price, while the records considered "truly artistic" enjoyed a reduced tax rate. Despite that, the group was not banned and it could freely continue to work and sell records, because non-aligned Yugoslavia was not so strict regarding censorship as the other communist states. Although the band played on the album in a rudimentary manner, the media and the public proclaimed it one of the best debut albums ever released in Yugoslavia. The record sleeve was designed by Mirko Ilić and featured a parody of the famous John Pasche's Tongue and Lips design with an added safety pin, representing the band's equal respect for both punk rock and The Rolling Stones. SMAK - Black Lady (1978)










































With newfound success SMAK recorded their second album 'Crna Dama' in the UK, in two versions, one in their native Serbian and the other in English which was released with the translated title "Black Lady". Signed to Bellophon in Germany and Fantasy in the Unated States, Smak's sound draws favorable comparisons to "Down To Earth" period Nektar, Lucifer's Friend and Deep Purple although nothing is particularly outstanding. ISKRE - Stalaktit (Sve single ploče 1964-65)












































ISKRE was formed in 1961, in Beograd, Serbia (ex-Yugoslavia) by the students Slavoljub Bogdanović (rhythm guitar), Miloš Sekulić (guitar), Gligorije Milanović (bass guitar), and Draško Reljin (drums). The band choose their name after Iskra amplifiers (originally designed for movie theaters) they used at the beginning of their career. The band started their career by playing instrumentals inspired by the music of The Tornados, and soon achieved notable popularity. They often performed at pop concerts and dances and appeared on Radio Belgrade. Iskre were one of the first Yugoslav bands that appeared on recordings by pop music singers: they recorded with Zafir Hadžimanov (covers of Cliff Richard songs), Ivanka Pavlović, Zoran Rambosek, and others. During 1963 Iskre often performed with female vocalist Brankica Sučević (an official member of Safiri). The band wanted to record their debut EP with her, but the editors of Diskos record label insisted that the band record the EP with the then-popular female singer Ivanka Pavlović. The EP with songs "Mala Šeila", "Locomotion", "Peppermint Twist", and "Slušaj pesmu" was eventually released under Ivanka Pavlović's name only. The EP soon became the second best-selling Yugoslav pop music record (behind Nikola Karović's "Mala Grkinja"). After the recording of the EP Milanović left the band, and was replaced by Dragan Mirković. In January 1964 the band won the first place at the "Parada ritma" festival held at Dom sindikata. Several months later they held their first solo concert at Kolarac People's University, and soon after released their official debut EP, with songs "Stalaktit" (a cover of a Les Aiglons song), "Šeba", "Rock za dobro jutro" and "Zvončići". After the release of the EP Mirković left the band, and was replaced by a former Siluete and Lutalice member Branko Gluščević. During 1965 they recorded two EPs, both featuring four songs, three of them being instrumental tracks. They appeared in Toma Janjić's film "Glasam za ljubav", becoming the first Yugoslav rock band to appear on film. At this time the band's popularity declined, due to the popularity of new rock genres. The band started covering Macedonian traditional songs, but did not see expected success. During January and February 1966 they performed at Belgrade Gitarijada where they won the fifth place.
